On a gently sloping hillside in Karystos, within the rugged landscape of southern Evia, a contemporary residence finds its place with quiet restraint. The terrain is defined by exposed rock, low Mediterranean vegetation, and distant views unfolding toward the Aegean Sea. Rather than imposing itself, the architecture follows the natural contours of the land, taking advantage of the existing slope and orientation, while most importantly responding to the prevailing strong northeast winds.
The building is articulated through low, horizontal volumes with clear rectangular geometry and flat roofs. Its presence remains deliberately subdued, grounded in a palette of natural, earthy tones and matte finishes that absorb, rather than reflect, the intense Greek light.
External spaces are seamlessly integrated into the terrain. Large, seemingly floating concrete slabs trace the natural slope, reinforcing the dialogue between the built and the unbuilt, while allowing the landscape to remain dominant. In the background, the Aegean Sea is revealed as a calm, atmospheric horizon—never dominant, yet always present—acting as a quiet counterpoint to the solidity of the land and the grounded nature of the architecture.
Light plays a defining role in shaping the experience of the residence. In the warm, angled glow of late afternoon, the textures of stone, concrete, and vegetation are softly accentuated, while in the clarity of morning light, the geometry becomes more pronounced and visual connections to the surrounding landscape are sharpened. At night, illumination remains subtle, with concealed, warm, low-intensity lighting tracing paths and gently highlighting plantings.
The overall composition reflects an ecological design approach rooted in sensitivity and restraint. The aim is not transformation, but integration—an architecture that restores, frames, and coexists with its environment, conveying calmness, sustainability, and a quiet sense of luxury. Emphasis is placed on shading and wind protection, with materials selected for their durability over time and resilience to demanding climatic conditions. The design is carefully shaped to address the need for shaded outdoor spaces, enhancing comfort while maintaining a strong connection to the landscape.
